New 2026 Power Bank Rules for Air Travel
Updated: 2 days ago
Power banks are receiving new restrictions for air travel due to concerns about lithium battery thermal runaway and fire risks. ICAO introduced these changes on March 27, 2026, and they are reflected in the 2026 IATA guidance.
What Passengers Need to Know
When travelling with a power bank:
Carry it in your carry-on baggage — never in checked baggage.
Maximum of two power banks per person.
Do not recharge the power bank during the flight.
Power banks should not be used to recharge other devices during the flight.
Protect each power bank from short circuits when not in use.
Power banks must also meet the applicable UN 38.3 testing requirements, and lithium-ion batteries are generally limited to 100 Wh.
What Airlines Need to Know
Airlines and operators should review their dangerous goods procedures, training, manuals, passenger communications, and safety processes to ensure they are prepared for the new requirements.
